I don't know why I still get overwhelmed by the fabulous response of all the folks in our community who support The Center in Asbury Park! A few weeks ago I sent an e-blast stating the fact that our pantry shelves were low - nearly empty! This is not unusual in the summer months when some of the regular food drives are suspended. But, of course, when the shelves are empty our folks are still hungry. The e-blast was just out and the food started coming in. Individuals went shopping. Faith communities did an extra drive. One family had an open house and asked people to bring food. One person "hit up" her friends for a cash donation and then she went shopping with a truck! And it keeps happening. Our shelves are looking much more healthy now!
And then I sent another e-blastlooking for some volunteer cooks for some of the weekend slots in September and October. Immediately, again, the responses starting coming in. The slots are filled and now we're filling in November and December.
We're gearing up for the big 20th Anniversary Celebration in October. And as we do so and look at pictures and print items that have been part of the history of The Center I keep getting reminded of the people who came out in the Spring of 1992 to answer the call to serve folks in need living with HIV/AIDS. And they have never stopped coming! Our anniversary celebration is a reminder of the the fact that we are doing this together.
What a wonderful thing to celebrate!
