We are getting ready to once again light our candles and walk from The Center in Asbury Park to Trinity Church   to Remember our Sisters and Brothers lost to this disease, to hold on to one another as we continue the struggle and to pray for an end. The theme that has been set for World AIDS Day for the next few years is "Getting to Zero." As we prepare the program for our gathering at Trinity Church we are preparing to hear a young woman, Wanda, recite for us the following poem composed for this World AIDS Day. It certainly expresses why we gather!

World Aids Day 2012 - Getting to Zero

It has been too long, too many tears
The thing called AIDS has caused too many fears.
The word aid means to assist
But when you add an "s", love ceases to exist.

The face of AIDS today has changed the game .
It does not matter about power, money or fame.
Ignorance was  the reason that many were ill.
It was even said AIDS was created to kill.

Now in the year of 2012 we have learned to have AIDS is not a sin.
With education and determination, this now is a battle we can win.
So all the hate that used to show
Has turned to" How can I help? What do I need to know?"

Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV 20 years ago .
Now he is a role nodel that exudes strength, character and a happy glow.
He was able to continue with basketball.
But he soon realized he had another call.
He chose to represent, that this illness  does not mean life is over, give up, get ready to die.
Instead, Listen to your doctor, your body and keep up your medications , give good health  a try!

Today is a time to celebrate!
No matter what happens, life is great!
We should not have time to bully or hate.

Please do not continue to act in a negative way.
Spread love and educate each and every day.
Be strong,  never give up hope, continue to fight.
When  we work together it is a beautiful sight.

So let us be kind to each one we meet.
A simple smile is an easy way to greet.
Maybe one day  World AIDS  Day will announce there is a cure.
"Getting To Zero"can be reached from shore to shore
